Planet Tango’s Alberto Paz , November 6th Update

Kaos, working hard for Alberto's recovery
Alberto Paz received 14 days of highly specialized, emergency, critical, cardiac care that not only saved his life, but most extra-ordinarily, he suffered no neurological, mental or physical damage!  Which countries would extend such health care to someone who had no coverage?

Referrals to this site allow you to assist Valorie and Alberto pay for the emergency services that saved his life.  Your generous donation can be made directly to:  Alberto Paz Account c/o Calgary Foothills Hospital, a wonderful gift of support to a friend at his greatest need in time.

Sandra,
Forgive me for not calling. I am so worn out. I am losing my voice. I read your long wonderful FB post with the latest update. I am amazed how you got everyone's name from that night....
AND I was informed today that Canada will be sending me a bill, probably around $200K when all is said and done....WTF a bill is just a piece of paper....So I am fund raising as much as I can ... it will only cost me $8K a day on the ward, instead of the $14K per day it is costing now. ... This team of doctors here is very aggressive, they are ninjas ...
I am so very tired.

We thank everyone involved with Alberto's critical cardiology care at the Foothills Hospital, as well as all who are sending notes, prayers and contributions for the Foothills health care and MediVac costs.

The emotional roller coaster continues to peak and spike with little rest, based upon the test results of October 30th: Alberto is in stable, but critical condition with dire need of heart surgery.

As previously written, the angiogram last week revealed a 100% blocked artery. The Calgary Cardiologist Ninja Team (Valorie's coin) informed her of two choices: perform complicated surgery for the blockage is in a tricky location near the valve OR open heart, bypass surgery whereby they would also replace the valve at this time.

Canadian Health Care is not free and not be confused with access to services or refusal of care, as in other countries.  It is only in 2009 that we in Alberta - the richest Canadian province stopped paying monthly health premiums - out of our pockets.  If you didn't have VALID provincial or currently paid status, Doctors and Walk In Clinics would refuse service and send you to Emergency.  Really and they still do.  The Canadian Health Care system is severely under siege of imploding due to heavy demand, under staffing and serious under financing for our own citizens. In the past week, there were numerous scathing reports of the pathetic state of EMERGENCY services.

Fortunately, we had an exceptional experience on October 26th, 2010 that saved his life:  regardless of health care or citizenship Alberto received the fastest, best emergency care, continued critical care and the leading edge, Calgary Cardiology team was prepared to immediately perform this crucial heart surgery last week.

Valorie and family have decided in association with their NOLA Cardiologist to fly him back to the US for surgery, rather than do it ASAP here. Over the next few weeks, they will continue to stabilize Alberto and prepare him for travel to NOLA or the nearest US hospital.

We were so excited for Alberto and Valorie, founders of www.Planet-Tango.com to join us, Epicurean Tango Society in Calgary, Alberta CANADA for an amazing 10 Days of Total Tango Immersion.  Alberto's shocking heart attack at the Airport has stunned us all.  Please get the word out to the community for prayers, emails and support.

These difficult, challenging and worrisome conditions are exacerbated by the fact that Alberto's MedicAid for out of State coverage is $5,000.

If you would like to help Alberto and Valorie cover the life saving, Critical Cardiac Care he is receiving at the Foothills Hospital, which will she informed me will be ~ $250,000 and you are inspired to assist, please contribute to the Calgary Foothills Hospital, c/o Alberto Paz.

I know this feisty Argentine is a fighter and Alberto's unique way of uniting the Tango community, as he envisioned with www.Planet-Tango.com Links.  If your Tango Club has a Links Listing on Planet Tango or you have recently requested a link on Planet Tango, please forward these updates to your community for greatest "Tanguero and Friends" reach, during this critical life juncture.

We are awed by the international notes, offers of support, prayers for Valorie and Alberto, thank you.

Valorie is overwhelmed by the kind, generous, loving and hospitable Tangeros who are part of Epicurean Tango Society … the outpouring of offers for accommodation to those who want to be here for Alberto and Valorie: transportation, meals, love, prayers and anything else we need, helps ease the shock. We never had any doubt about the extra-ordinary blessings of such fascinating people and special friends.

Thank you to all who shared your own stories about their dealings with the Foothills Hospital – we return prayers for yourself and loved ones who required Health Care and their continued good health.

We'd also like to send our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the staff on hand at the Customs area on Tuesday October 26, 2010 ~ 9:15 pm – Continental Airlines, and other Airline Staff who performed CPR, Canada Customs Agents, and Calgary Airport Paramedics you saved his life.  Natasha please forward a copy and I'll write separately. Constable Saade, Badge #4635; EMS Staff to Lougheed Hospital Emergency Staff, Dr Rick Morris, Dr Ping Chen, Ryan RN Emergency - the EMS Staff to Foothills, Maggie - RN Emergency, attending Fellow Dr. Stephanie Au, later on Dr.Champagne, and Dr. Hutchinson . The countless number of staff, at both emergency wards that seemingly were waiting for him. Thank you.

We are in a fluid state of instability … we cry, we laugh and we are an emotional wreck as we await news; one moment it is uplifting and very positive, the next is critical with grave concerns about life; seemingly stable then onto precarious.

There is no doubt, Alberto is in severe health condition and we continue to ask for your prayers, support and appreciate your forwarding this message to everyone in the Tango community.

Saturday afternoon, evening, Alberto moved into critical mode. He regained consciousness, and very positively responded to the family, directions and questions but had short term memory losses, such as not knowing where he was, or why he was here. The doctors say this is usual and would be eased with therapy. He was comforted by Valorie, Gina and Alberto Jr's constant presence and talking with him, helped restore some missing pieces; it seemed all was progressing in the right direction.

However, Alberto's short term memory loss caused critical time delays that he could not afford – over 6 hours to persuade him to comply with the angiogram, for which he must be fully awake. This played havoc with the time sensitive, necessary tests, as he would agree, then forget and rescind his approval to proceed … add in other emergency cases and it was a massive high pressure situation … which resulted in heart failure and further resuscitation services, compounding the severe distress as to the status of his life.  Finally between his Doctor in NOLA and Valorie's presence they were able to convince him to do the angiogram.

By God's grace, Alberto could see Valorie in the control room, where she could talk to him and they blew kisses to one another ... this love story and tango is long for this world … Alberto is one stubborn Argentine and not giving up!

The ultrasound revealed he had fractured ribs from the CPR and multiple defibrillation at the Airport – which saved his life; a 100% blockage in one of his arteries, located very close to a valve, which is tricky and life threatening surgery; the other option was open heart surgery; either option is critical, major surgery with massive repercussions, with time is of the essence. A stent is insufficient to the magnitude of the situation. The Foothills cardiologists were going to confer with his NOLA cardiologist today to evaluate the various options and determine the best route: proceed with life saving surgery here or try to elevate his mental and physical health to Medivac him to a USA Hospital.

Thank you for your prayers, wishes, notes, calls, texts from around the world for Valorie & Alberto! I will keep you posted and trust we will have good news soon.

We treasure Alberto and Valorie's presence and know we will forever be connected in life and our Tango journey from this time forward, which was felt from the first hello.

Last evening the breathing apparatus was removed! His son arrived from Denver and there is no doubt Alberto is very happy to see Gina and Alberto Jr, as well as Valorie!

Today Valorie advised Alberto is quite lucid, although he has no recollection of the events leading up to his being in the hospital. He is still under critical watch, but progress is being made, he is now down to 1 machine from the ~ 12 systems!

He has had a brain scan, and the angiogram was delayed until discussions with his NOLA doctor.

Thank you for continuing to send all your prayers, emails, texts, phone calls, warm wishes and support!

Referrals to this site allow you to assist Valorie and Alberto pay for the emergency services that saved his life.  Your generous donation can be made directly to:  Alberto Paz Account c/o Calgary Foothills Hospital, a wonderful gift of support to your dear friend.

Sandra,
Forgive me for not calling.

Today was a very uplifting … Alberto's body temperature was successfully returned to normal and evidence that the sedation was slowly dissipating: Alberto began to show signs of his fighting spirit!

It must have been the wonderful Tango music Valorie played for him!

He opened his eyes, squeezed Valorie's hand, moved his legs, responded to directives, recognized voices and could nod/shake his head in response to questions! He remains with the breathing tube at least for another day, although he has indicated quite clearly, he is not happy about this uncomfortable contraption!

Friday he is scheduled for angioplasty and we will have even more info as to his status.

Thank you for all your prayers, emails, texts, phone calls, warm wishes and support!

.
Tuesday night at 9:30 pm we were excitedly awaiting the arrival of Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart to launch Epicurean Tango Society's – Argentine Tango Intensivo 10 Days of Total Tango Immersion beginning on Wednesday October 27th, 2010 … Planet Tango's first time in Calgary!
Since February 2010, Alberto and I developed a wonderful friendship, emailing and speaking weekly about Tango, culture, traditions, music, teaching, history, knowledge, experience, lexicon and the kind of Tango content that was enjoyable and educational to elevate fundamental Tango Technique Excellence. A teaser was sent on September 21st and this was publicized on Monday September 27th, 2010:

Argentine Tango 10 day Intensivo Mini Residency with Master Tango Instructors
Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart
2009 USA Salon Tango Champions
Best Selling Authors of "Gotta Tango" book & DVD
Bibliographers of Planet-Tango.com
October 27th to November 5th, 2010
From that date forward, regularly advertised and promoted on dozens of International, North American, Canadian, Regional and local Tango, entertainment, media and dance sites, plus thousands of people via my distribution and many others who kindly shared the Tango Magic Spirit, espoused by Planet Tango.
In front of the airport arrivals, there was a major commotion of multiple emergency response vehicles; we wouldn't understand the magnitude of this scene for another 40 minutes, as our life and priorities would dramatically change in the next 36 hours.

As we waited, I noticed a woman passing by held up by two Continental Agents, when I suddenly realized it was Valorie; I called to her – with a glazed and disoriented look – almost blind like, she turned around and the most chilling words tumbled out of her mouth, "Alberto collapsed, he had a heart attack at the Customs entrance …" the rest seemed to move in fast and slow motion at once, as I tried to process this shocking news and understand what was going on. The day before, Alberto received a clean bill of health from his Doctor.

I know God was and is, watching over him, as this didn't happen during the flight, upon descent, deplaning or even the very long lonely walk from the gate to Customs … a sign.

They came off the ramp to line up for Customs, when he advised Valorie he felt faint – she turned around only to see him collapse, yelling out "heart attack, call the Doctor immediately". From Airline Staff, Customs Agents and Airport Paramedics – their quick action of CPR, followed by multiple defibrillation most certainly saved his life, as he was revived 7 times before a stable pulse was found … a sign.

This is why I have come to adore and love Alberto – only he could make such a grand, first entrance into Calgary, Alberta Canada, in the MOST PUBLIC and POPULATED place anywhere for IMMEDIATE emergency attention … Airport Customs … a sign.

As we followed the ambulance to Peter Lougheed Hospital, I pulled out my phone to call our dear friends Akram and Jen to let them know what occurred. My phone showed 1:42 am … what?? Did we really spend almost 5 hours at the airport? This was bizarre … couldn't have … then I saw the number 7 which is a spiritual number … this message told me, either God called Alberto home, or it was to let me know all would be ok. Upon disconnecting the call my phone returned to regular time 10:23 pm, but never registered the call … a sign.

It is EXCEPTIONAL for Emergency staff to be "waiting " for your arrival – at two hospitals!! No one else was there and ALL the staff were completely focused on him … a sign.

At Peter Lougheed Hospital, they cooled and stabilized Alberto, then immediately transferred him to Foothills Hospital where they induced a coma for 24 hours to reduce his body temperature and protect his brain from possible neurological damage.  At 12:30 am today, they began the warming process which would take 6 to 9 hours or longer to prevent shock to his organs. He is stable and has the best care by top cardiologists. We are blessed to know 2 doctors – a fellow and resident who are close by … a sign.

Alberto's daughter arrived last evening from Huntington Beach, CA and his son is arriving tonight from Denver. As the news gets out, friends and students from around the world, called, texted, emailed with prayers and many generous offers … our dear friends and tango community have stepped up quickly offering unconditional support to us and accommodation to those who are wanting to travel to be here with Alberto and Valorie … we are truly blessed … a sign.

Since Friday, I have received an overwhelming number of calls and emails about the Argentine Tango Intensivo with Alberto and Valorie. With everything upside down, on Wednesday and no sleep, I went from call to messages waiting , nonstop all day, afternoon and evening, advising callers what happened and the postponement, while trying to create an action plan of to do with sensitivity, grace and consideration. I tried my best to manage this unwieldy mercurial load; please accept my apologies if I missed you , emailed you twice and bear with me, as I try to cover all bases under these circumstances.

Our deepest, appreciation and heartfelt thank you to Akram and Jennifer for your steadfast care, love, support, friendship and stepping in to set up an Epicurean Tango Open at Carpenter's Hall to welcome those arriving for the "Dance Tango Tonight Workshop #1". We offered a complimentary evening of Tango, tea, juice, cookies and videos of Alberto and Valorie dancing, as well as sale of "Gotta Tango" books and DVD, which will be autographed. A small offering in light of the disappointment and tragic news with hopeful wishes. I'm sorry I missed taking a photo of the beautiful set up to show what a wonderful ambience they created to welcome everyone.

Hi Sandra & Ralph;

Many thanks for sharing last evening & introducing me to dancing the Tango.

Considering all the hard work you put in to make these evenings successful Sandra.

May I suggest that you arrange to have someone else looking after kitchen duties so that you can be free to dance , mingle and have more fun.

I look forward to being with you both for Valentine's Milonga Feb. 13th.

Cheers!

Thank you for a fabulous time...

Hello Sandra,

I would like to let you know that I had a fabulous time in the Milonga last night.

The venue, the people, the conversations, the food, the music and the dancing were all enjoyable. In addition, the promotion of multi-culture - giving out red pockets for the Chinese New Year was noted and appreciated!

I also enjoyed dancing a little bit of other Latin dances – Cha cha, Salsa, Merenge, Cumbia and Rumba. Thank you.

I look forward to attending the next Milonga. Hopefully, you and I could dance a song or two.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hi Anthony;

I enjoyed your Tango demonstrations, you are poetry in motion on the dance floor.

I really appreciated having the opportunity to share your table & visit with you in addition to receiving your patient Tango instructions.

It is very gracious of you to offer to teach me to dance the Argentine Tango and I am enthusiastically looking forward to mastering this very expressive Dance.

I realize that You are celebrating The New Year of The Tiger and The Olympic games are also being televised, however, I will make myself available at your convenience.

Hi Sandra & Ralph;

Thanks to You & Ralph for hosting a beautiful event.

Congratulations for hitting another home run,

Gung Hay Fat Choy to you too Ron,

Thanks for the praise. Remember, it is the lady that makes a guy look good on the dance floor, ALWAYS.

Us guys are merely coat hangers, our partners are the beautiful fabrics hanging on, our job is to debut the fabrics in attractive waves of wind.

Certainly nice to connect up with you, I shall make some arrangement to get you a good training partner and we shall take your dancing to serveral nodges up in no time.

Stay tune and take care,

Glad to contribute, Sandra and thanks for the invitation. You and Ralph and become a very important social centre for tango in Calgary very quickly!

Sorry I left early. I've been working very long days during the week, part of the weekend, because a broker has left and I'm taking over his book. That is on top of my regular work and although it's rewarding it's very tiring! As well, I've been fighting sinusitis for weeks now (I really don't like taking antibiotics), so I need lots of sleep.

Take care, see you on the dance floor soon,

Hi Ron!

I'm so pleased you'll be joining us for the Mardi Gras Milonga!

We have all been where you're at, but part of the Tango spirit is to share that joy. In Tango, you are always learning.

It is a pleasure to see your enthusiasm and there is no doubt with guidance from Anthony, Tess and Frank plus your keen desire to Tango, it will soon flow.

It is practice, perseverence and more practice, but there is no doubt - you will develop into a beautiful Tanguero, especially with your tall frame and long legs.

We believe in you and know, the butterfly that resides within will emerge.

See you this evening!

Hi Sandra;

Thank you for introducing me to Tango & your encouragement provides even more incentive to improve.

Unfortunately I am unable to join you for sundays Tango Practica as I will be with my son Mike this

weekend.

I look forward to being with you for more Tango next week.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend Sandra.

With love,

Ron

Hola Guylene, Sandra, Ralph,

Couldn't make it to tango tonight because I'm packing for a four day trip to Banff - leaving

tomorrow and reutrning Sunday - and then for my trip to AR, which leaves Monday morning. I'll be

back for the next tango night at DQ March 24, dance on in the meantime!

Sandra and Ralph, hope your next milonga is a smashing success!

abrazo,

David

Hello Sandra!!!

How are you?

Thanks for your e-mails and for the reminder for the Tango Practica on Thursdays and Sundays.

I will be there on Sunday for sure.!!! I will not be able to go on Thursdays because I have some classes in Bow Valley at that hour.

By the way, I would like to confirm my assistance to the Milonga on March.

The last Milonga was incredibly beautiful. I enjoyed every part of it: the decorations on the tables, the music , the food -which was so delicious- and the most important part: all the people who made an extraordinary atmosphere.

Everybody was still there at 1am. It is a pity that I had left because the cab was already there waiting for me, but for the next Milonga I will take the necessary previsions to leave it later.

:D

Thanks again for such incredible organization, for your effort and enthusiasm to organize it, a marvelous option that is already lighting the Tango life in Calgary.

Regards,

JUAN CARLOS

Hi Sandra and Ralph,

THANK YOU so much for bringing in Marcos and Ruta to Calgary for not only are they such super nice people, they are incredible teachers! Over the years, I have taken many dance disciplines and private lessons and I believe that they are simply the best ... at least for the way I learn.

Thank you too for a wonderful evening last night. You and Ralph have done a wonderful job in organizing the event ... you both also looked super last night.

Wishing you both big success in all your future endeavors!

Regards,
Cynthia
