Epicurean Tango Society's 2nd Big Birthday Bash Review: Celebrating Argentina’s Nation’s Day & Queen Victoria’s Birthday

Epicurean Tango Society's
2nd Big Birthday Bash
Milonga & Workshops
May 21 to May 23 2011
celebrating:
Argentina's Nation's Day – established May 25th, 1810
Queen Victoria's Birthday – born May 24th, 1819

Epicurean Tango Tantalized and Satisfied the Senses with 4 Tango events, over the long weekend in Calgary! It would have been nice to hop on the personal jet to Buenos Aires, but since it was in for servicing, we decided to bring Argentina to Calgary!  With 2 workshops, a Saturday Milonga and Sunday Tango Social, we Tango'd the long weekend away!! If you are a Tango dancer, no doubt, this was the place to be: lots of tango dancing, fun, socializing, learning, eating, mingling, laughter, great music and break through moments!  What else would a Tango'd Tanguero / Tanguera appreciate?  Thus, the Epicurean Tango Experience continued with draws and gifts for: a massage to soothe, a gym membership to stretch and wine to indulge. Now that's a sensational mind, body and soul Tango weekend!  We had workshops to learn and improve our technique mixed with fun, happy people, who share a passion for dancing Tango!!  A tantalizing tango trattoria and an infused weekend of Epicurean Tango Experiences, thanks for making it magical!
Outstanding, light cake w dulce de leche from Banuka Bakery
Today, May 25th we celebrate
Argentina's Nation's Day est 1810
and
Queen Victoria's Birthday, born 1819.

The May Revolution or May Week – May 18th to 25th, 1810 was a crucial change that marked a before and an afterwards in Argentine history. Argentina's citizen's decided they should rule, in the Spanish King's stead since he was imprisoned by Napolean Bonaparte. On May 25th locals gathered in Plaza Mayor, demanding news about what was going on. The local officials responded by acknowledging the authority of the Revolutionary Junta, thereby establishing the First National Government. It took 6 years before Argentina's Independence was achieved from Spain, July 9, 1816.

RSVP for Epicurean Tango's 2nd Milonga celebrating Argentina's Independence Day, July 9, 2011.

Victoria Day (always on a Monday before May 25th) celebrates Queen Victoria, born May 24, 1819, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India. Established as a holiday in 1845, but in 1901 became a national holiday, Empire Day in 1901 for those in British Empire. In 1952 an amendment was made to the Canadian Statutes, whereby, May 24th, became the official celebration Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, birthdays for which we have a long weekend in Canada.

So celebrate we did, with a trattoria of 4 tantalizing
epicurean tango events to satisfy the senses!

This weekend's Technique Excellence & Musicality Series© with Vincenzo and Ida, Tango Divino Edmonton on: Essential Technical Elements: Balance, Pivots, Rotation. Saturday's workshop featured Front & Back Ocho, Sanguichito, Parada, Barrida & Gancio.

Although we planned a few surprises, last week's full moon certainly had its devilish fun with everyone as well as delivery of many wonderful surprises to coincide with the Victoria Day long weekend and Argentina's Nation's Day.

We barely finished the workshop only to discover Ralph was late arriving to a locked shop with the Argentinean empanadas inside!!! YIKES!!! Numerous frantic calls were made to the shop and the owner, but it was the long weekend … Akram's quick thinking saved the day as we were able to replace the entire order with Lebanese fatayer.
Ironically with the very same savory fillings: Beef, Chicken, Spinach plus Potato that were very flavourful with tasty pastry to complement the fresh pico de gallo, guacamole, chips and salada.

The silver lining, revealed itself and this weekend was memorable for many reasons: first of all, it didn't snow!!

The earlier workshop with Vincenzo and Ida was greatly enjoyed. Returning to the hall, Guests began to arrive, emanating a sense of fun, laughter and joyful energy … the women were glowing beautifully: sexy dresses, little hats, sweet hand bags, seductive shoes to entice the men, "c'mon let's tango" … the men were handsomely dressed, nicely groomed with freshly pressed shirts and pants, haute socks peeked out from a few pant legs and a suave tuxedo clad tanguero. Breath taking!

Reconnections, new introductions, table selections made, a little mingling and another Epicurean Tango Milonga begins! It was our pleasure to welcome Vicente and Cristina from TangoPlus Edmonton and one of the original founders of Club Tango Argentino in 1999/2000, Fern Lockwood. It was heart warming to see the surprise of re-acquaintances from past times!

Mervin & Tanya, May 2010 Milonga
So just when you think it can't get any better, this special note from Tanya, arrived, "Sandra, I wish I could attend because a year ago at this very function I was on my first date with my now husband. It would have been amazing to celebrate in the same place, but we are in the UK, so unfortunately a little too far to go. Have a wonderful party!"

The smiles tell all in this photo from May 2010! Dear Tanya and Mervin, I shared your note at the Milonga and we sent out a big CONGRATULATIONS to you, "our first Epicurean Tango wedding" … how amazing! Our best for a wonderful life wherever you and Mervin choose to be!" Closer than Calgary, I know you'll feel right at home with our friend Leszek and Jocelyne at Tango de la Rosa. We look forward to your company, whenever you visit or return to Calgary!

On top of this wonderful news, we celebrated 16 birthdays, if I missed you, please let me know! Yet, with the joy, we recognize how precious life is, when loss occurs. Our prayers go to Vaughan for his brother and Dina for her mother, as well as, each of your families.

We danced, ate, drank, talked, reconnected, celebrated birthdays and weddings, gave our condolences, ate dessert.  The evening was infused with a beautiful tango magic befitting of a long weekend gathering!

It is with great appreciation, Epicurean Tango acknowledges the following
Sponsor Partners for their generous support and congratulates the draw winners:

APEX Massage Therapy: ½ Hour Massage - Tess Martinez
Kensington Wine Market: Argentine's Durigutti – Ida Renzi

  Banuka Bakery (formerly Cakeland)
Soy Latinoamericano & Buscando America

In addition to the above, we were excited to offer

each Guest one of these Generous Gifts:
APEX Massage Therapy - $20 off 1 hour Massage Certificate, 2 locations
Fitness Plus – 1 Month Full Membership, 2 locations

If you attended the Milonga/Workshops/Social
and didn't receive either, please contact me!

Epicurean Tango Experiences Satisfy Tangueros' Senses

Next came dessert, tea and coffee! Not only did we have the Big Birthday Cake that was so light, moist and filled with dulce de leche but Alfonso surprised us, with a wonderful "Brazo de Mercedes"! It was so light, that in no time flat it disappeared, alongwith the birthday cake … so we had to shake it a little more with Salsa, Bachata, Swing, and Tango.

Another joyous Milonga comes to a close, as satiated tangueras and tangueros said good night, drove home and dreamt of the evening's company, conversation, camaraderie, food and fun ... always dancing another tango.

Sunday night, we were ready to return for Workshop #2 with Vincenzo and Ida to pick up where we left off on Saturday. Tangueros are attracted to these, 'must attend workshops' due to their teaching knowledge, experience, approach, care and ability to help each progress in their tango journey, whatever level they're at. For me, that embodies Epicurean Tango, Technique Excellence Philosophy.

As we concluded our 2nd Workshop and 3rd event, I am always deeply touched by the participants and Tango Divino. To see the bond developing, to hear the students' "aha" connecting to the teaching, to feel the difference in their Tango and the unconditional sharing of Tango Spirit is gratifying. Thanks to all of you for such an amazing gift and blessing. With the "work" out of the way, Vincenzo & Ida, thanked everyone for coming out and encouraged each one to practice what they taught over the weekend. Come practice what you learned and smooth out your movements at Epicurean Tango Practicas, Sunday and Wednesday 7 to 11 pm - 1 hour Summer Bonus.

Let the Sunday Tango Social Begin!
Tango, Milonga & Vals from Golden Age Orchestras, Remastered Originals, Nuevo & Modern

A Sunday Tango Social is perfect for a long weekend and Tangueros thought too! So event #4 flowed smoothly from the workshop, as more dancers arrived.  We talked, danced tango, laughed, danced milonga, mingled, danced vals! We drank a little wine, tea, coffee, water, juice and ate the amazing cake with rich icing and lots of dulce de leche filling!

One last piece of business to attend to, included with the Victoria Day Package was an extra draw ticket!

APEX Massage Therapy: ½ Hour Massage - Alex Postman
Epicurean Tango: 6 Practica Pass – Hendrik Lumumba

Special Thanks to these Sponsor Partners:

Epicurean Tango Experiences Satisfy Tangueros' Senses

With all the wonderful attributes of Vincenzo and Ida, I believe their most magnetic appeal is their vivacious tango spirit. They tango, milonga and vals with every Tanguera/Tanguero, regardless if someone is new to tango, new to the club, reconnecting or intermediate.  It is this warm, welcoming tango spirit, within a friendly milieu that we embrace.  A tango culture to expand the community.  Welcome to Epicurean Tango

Hi Sandra & Ralph;

Many thanks for sharing last evening & introducing me to dancing the Tango.

Considering all the hard work you put in to make these evenings successful Sandra.

May I suggest that you arrange to have someone else looking after kitchen duties so that you can be free to dance , mingle and have more fun.

I look forward to being with you both for Valentine's Milonga Feb. 13th.

Cheers!

Hi Anthony…It was a wonderful event. Thank you for your instruction.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the class.

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon with Frank and Tess. They took me to buy shoes and then we practiced for 2 hours. The shoes made a world of difference…Frank thought it was more his instruction….Ha, Ha!

Thank you for a fabulous time...

Hello Sandra,

I would like to let you know that I had a fabulous time in the Milonga last night.

The venue, the people, the conversations, the food, the music and the dancing were all enjoyable. In addition, the promotion of multi-culture - giving out red pockets for the Chinese New Year was noted and appreciated!

I also enjoyed dancing a little bit of other Latin dances – Cha cha, Salsa, Merenge, Cumbia and Rumba. Thank you.

I look forward to attending the next Milonga. Hopefully, you and I could dance a song or two.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

forwarded from Anthony re: The Argentine Tango

Hi Anthony;

I enjoyed your Tango demonstrations, you are poetry in motion on the dance floor.

I really appreciated having the opportunity to share your table & visit with you in addition to receiving your patient Tango instructions.

It is very gracious of you to offer to teach me to dance the Argentine Tango and I am enthusiastically looking forward to mastering this very expressive Dance.

I realize that You are celebrating The New Year of The Tiger and The Olympic games are also being televised, however, I will make myself available at your convenience.

Gung Hay Fat Choy to you too Ron,

Thanks for the praise. Remember, it is the lady that makes a guy look good on the dance floor, ALWAYS.

Us guys are merely coat hangers, our partners are the beautiful fabrics hanging on, our job is to debut the fabrics in attractive waves of wind.

Certainly nice to connect up with you, I shall make some arrangement to get you a good training partner and we shall take your dancing to serveral nodges up in no time.

Stay tune and take care,

Glad to contribute, Sandra and thanks for the invitation. You and Ralph and become a very important social centre for tango in Calgary very quickly!

Sorry I left early. I've been working very long days during the week, part of the weekend, because a broker has left and I'm taking over his book. That is on top of my regular work and although it's rewarding it's very tiring! As well, I've been fighting sinusitis for weeks now (I really don't like taking antibiotics), so I need lots of sleep.

Take care, see you on the dance floor soon,

Hi Ron!

I'm so pleased you'll be joining us for the Mardi Gras Milonga!

We have all been where you're at, but part of the Tango spirit is to share that joy. In Tango, you are always learning.

It is a pleasure to see your enthusiasm and there is no doubt with guidance from Anthony, Tess and Frank plus your keen desire to Tango, it will soon flow.

It is practice, perseverence and more practice, but there is no doubt - you will develop into a beautiful Tanguero, especially with your tall frame and long legs.

We believe in you and know, the butterfly that resides within will emerge.

See you this evening!

Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 1:26 PM

Hello Sandra!!!

How are you?

Thanks for your e-mails and for the reminder for the Tango Practica on Thursdays and Sundays.

I will be there on Sunday for sure.!!! I will not be able to go on Thursdays because I have some classes in Bow Valley at that hour.

By the way, I would like to confirm my assistance to the Milonga on March.

The last Milonga was incredibly beautiful. I enjoyed every part of it: the decorations on the tables, the music , the food -which was so delicious- and the most important part: all the people who made an extraordinary atmosphere.

Everybody was still there at 1am. It is a pity that I had left because the cab was already there waiting for me, but for the next Milonga I will take the necessary previsions to leave it later.

:D

Thanks again for such incredible organization, for your effort and enthusiasm to organize it, a marvelous option that is already lighting the Tango life in Calgary.

Wishing you both big success in all your future endeavors!
